Master Thesis "Theoretical and Simulative Investigation of series-resonant-converter"

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar energy research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1400 employees are working for a sustainable, economic, safe and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our research priorities of energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. We are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company spin-offs and global collaborations.

You would like to play an active role in shaping the energy transition and write your thesis in this area? At Fraunhofer ISE you will find the experts and the environment to realise these goals. Your thesis will be about the theoretical and simulative investigation of the behavior of the series-resonant-converter-topology. The investigation of effects such as the attenuation of the resonant circuit and their interaction on the soft-switching behavior of the topology should be a focus of your research. Further points are the theoretical description of measurement methods for frequency tracking, the development of modulation types for soft start and precharging of the secondary side, the description of behavior during dead time and much more. One aim of your work should also be to derive design criteria for the topology. Both simulation models and constructed converters of this topology are available, which you can use to validate your investigations and results.

For our group "Power Electronics" we are looking for a student assisstant to start as soon as possible, with the oppurtunity to write a Master thesis.

What you will do

  • Aim of your thesis will be the theoretical and simulative investigation of the behavior of the series-resonant-converter-topology.
  • You will familiarise yourself with the topology of the resonance converter.
  • You will use the available simulations to gain an understanding of how it works.
  • You will conduct your research using Python, with PLECS available as the simulation software.
  • You will document and present your work and results.

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying electrical engineering or a similar subject.
  • You plan and complete tasks independently and with high quality.
  • You are a team player and have a committed and independent approach to work.
  • You have a good knowledge of German and English.

What you can expect

  • Exclusive insight: By working together with the scientists in our department, you will gain insights into the day-to-day research and development work at a research institute.
  • Laboratory infrastructure: At Fraunhofer ISE, we work with state-of-the-art equipment and devices so that research projects can be carried out using the latest technology.
  • Research mix: You will have the opportunity to combine experimental work with theory, thus applying and expanding the knowledge you gained during your studies.
  • Supervision: You will be supervised by scientists during your work and receive feedback on your progress.
  • Teamwork: You will gain experience in working in a team with our scientific and student staff and can contribute the experience you have already gained.
  • Working hours and location: We offer you the opportunity to flexibly adjust your working hours to your needs and to occasionally work from home.
  • Equal opportunities: We value equal opportunities and embrace diversity.
  • After work: Celebrate yourself and your colleagues at after-work events or our annual employee parties.

In addition to the thesis, a contract as a research assistant will be agreed. The remuneration depends on the academic degree.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

Interested? Apply online now (incl. cover letter, CV, transcript of records/work reference). We look forward to getting to know you!
