Master thesis »Simulation of the microstructure evolution during forging of a large turbine shaft«
At the Fraunhofer IWM, 330 employees conduct research on materials and components with the aim of better understanding, developing, processing and using them. In our projects, we bridge the gap between the properties of materials and the durability, safety and function of technical systems.

What you will do
In our group "Forming Processes", we deal with all issues relating to the optimization of forming processes and forming tools, as well as the development of models that describe material behavior and determine relevant material and process parameters. Varied tasks await you: You will be part of our team for the numerical simulation of the industrial forging of a large turbine shaft. This involves modeling the complex manufacturing process and carrying out finite element simulations, which you will validate using real process data. You will analyze the results and correlate the predicted microstructures and mechanical properties with experimental results. The results obtained should be used afterwards for component and process optimization, considering various influencing variables. In order to keep up to date with the latest developments in material and process simulation, you will familiarize yourself with current publications and literature.
What you bring to the table
Your professional background: You are currently studying Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a related subject and ideally already have experience with finite element simulations. As part of your master thesis, you would like to deepen your knowledge in the field of material modeling and simulation, and you are excited by the opportunity to conduct research in a research institute on both scientific and industry-related topics. Qualifications that complement your profile: Thanks to your strong problem-solving skills, you are able to independently find solutions to complex problems and take a critical look at the issues you are dealing with. Ideally, you also have gained experience in in materials mechanics and/or forming technology in the past. Your strong communication skills and ability to work in a team round off your profile and open doors for you to work at our institute.
