Process Engineer (All Genders) - Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE)

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is one of the world's leading research institutions in the fields of III-V semiconductors and synthetic diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic, optoelectronic and quantum technology components and systems. Our focus is on research and development for applications in the areas of security, health, energy, information and communication.

We are an internationally leading competence center for molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), in which thin, functional semiconductor layers are deposited on semiconductor wafers with atomic precision.

What you will do

We are looking for an experienced engineer with a degree in technical physics (technical college or university) who enjoys practical work in the laboratory and wants to work in a creative research environment at the highest technical level without necessarily pursuing a scientific career themselves.

We offer the opportunity to contribute your knowledge of ultra-high vacuum technology and molecular beam epitaxy of crystalline semiconductor layers to the operation of our large-scale systems. The focus of your work is on the implementation and further development of sophisticated MBE processes for the realization of innovative optoelectronic and electronic components within the framework of national and international research collaborations.

  • You will operate a multi-wafer MBE system to produce thin-film structures for optoelectronic and electronic components based on III/V compound semiconductors.
  • By developing and optimizing existing and new MBE processes, you will realize new material combinations or components and address changing scientific questions. You will also be responsible for the planning and implementation of epitaxy series, including documentation and statistical evaluation.
  • In close cooperation with other working groups and departments at the institute, you will characterize the layers produced and carry out a quality assessment.
  • You will be in charge of monitoring the system's capability and preventive maintenance.
  • Together with the responsible group leader, you will coordinate maintenance and repair work and, if necessary, implement technical improvements in coordination with the system manufacturer.

What you bring to the table

  • You have successfully completed a degree (B.Sc.) in physical engineering, microsystems engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics or a comparable qualification.
  • You have many years of practical experience in operating molecular beam epitaxy systems.
  • You enjoy analytical work and scientific questions.
  • You are physically fit enough to occasionally work wearing respiratory protection.
  • You are characterized by your team spirit, your communication skills and an independent, goal-oriented, but extremely careful and conscientious way of working.
  • Good English skills round off your profile.

What you can expect

  • State-of-the-art research infrastructure with unique facilities along the entire value chain
  • Application-oriented projects and close contacts with industry and public clients
  • A modern, internationally-oriented work environment with space for independent work and creative participation
  • A good working atmosphere in a cooperative team
  • Personal development opportunities through a wide range of training opportunities
  • Extensive additional benefits such as a company pension plan (VBL), a discounted job ticket for public transport and various health offers (e.g. Pilates)
  • A family-friendly workplace with offers for combining family and work (office with children)
  • Rental bike station and parking garage with e-charging station directly at the institute

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. The position is initially limited to 2 years. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
