With us, you can work in the future today

Would you like to contribute your expertise to innovation in Battery Safety?
We develop simulation models that help the industry design safe battery systems for cars, helicopters, airplanes, and home storage systems. At the Fraunhofer EMI, your day to day work actively contributes to innovative and safer batteries all across the globe.

We are looking for you to join our »Materials and Simulation Methods« department at our site in Freiburg.

Your challenges

Building the future

We develop simulation models that help the industry to design safe battery systems for cars, helicopters, airplanes and home storage systems.

Use creativity and research flexibility

With your know-how and creative ideas, you develop models to describe the thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries on the basis of publications and highly instrumented tests performed at the Fraunhofer EMI. To evaluate the thermal runaway, you will run CFD and structural dynamic simulations. To this end, you will also apply and further develop numerical methods for fluid-structure interaction of hot gases and particles to a wide variety of structures.

Take responsibility

You will become the qualified and competent contact person for the simulation of batteries with focus on thermal runaway. With your research results, you will contribute to the battery safety. You will be in close contact with your colleagues and the team that carries out battery abuse tests. Your work will be rounded off by managing projects with public and industrial clients.

Convey your message

Creativity requires a lot of communication: we want to shape teamwork together with you: You are an active participant of the scientific discourse. You will coordinate research work internally and externally with international project partners and present your research results through reports and publications to our clients and partners as well as at national and international conferences.

Your qualifications and skills

  • A university degree (master’s or diploma) in engineering, applied science, or a related STEM field ‒ a PhD is a huge asset.
  • In-depth knowledge of fluid and continuum mechanics, as well as of thermodynamics and combustion.
  • Ability to independently perform simulation studies (ideally with OpenFOAM, Ansys Fluent or LS-DYNA).
  • Programming experience with Python and C++ .
  • An analytical, conceptual, and results-oriented mindset.
  • A high degree of independence, strong communication skills, and a structured work style.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken German and English skills (C1 level or higher)

What we offer

  • An innovative research institute with diverse topics, a high level of practical relevance, and plenty of scope for your creativity and initiative.
  • A young, engaged, and dynamic team working on exciting research questions at the cutting edge, and the opportunity to participate in the strategic development of research and development topics.
  • An open and collegial work environment equipped with an excellent IT infrastructure.
