Scientist - Signal Generation & PCB Design 1

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is one of the leading research facilities worldwide in the fields of III-V semiconductors and synthetic diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic, optoelectronic as well as quantum technological devices and systems. The focus is on research and development for applications in the fields of security, health, energy, information, and communication.

What you will do

By investigating and further refining ultra-wideband communication and radar systems, your role will include the development of novel solutions for the next but one mobile communications standard with extremely high data rates of more than 100 Gbit/s as well as for high-resolution imaging sensor applications. You will design and characterize low-noise signal sources as well as baseband and radio frequency components, perform EM simulations and work on the integration of trigger and readout circuits.

  • You develop highly stable signal sources (DDS, PLL, DRO) and create hardware layouts and printed circuit board designs (PCB design).
  • Furthermore, you examine and optimize the existing hardware.
  • Your area of responsibility includes the setup, programming and operation of measurement stations as well as the characterization and documentation of the developed components.
  • You will lead research projects or sub-projects and work closely with other groups and departments at the institute.
  • Last but not least, you will be involved in the acquisition of new research projects from government authorities and industrial clients.

What you bring to the table

  • You have a successfully completed university degree (diploma/ master's degree) in electronics/electrical engineering, microsystems engineering, communications engineering or physics or a comparable qualification.
  • In addition, you bring first experience in PCB design or electronics development and high affinity to PCB design.
  • You have knowledge of signal integrity and the use of a high-end PCB design tool, preferably Cadence Allegro or Altium Designer.
  • Ideally, you have practice in analog and digital circuit design and in using circuit and 3D EM field simulation programs.
  • Your ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new problems as well as an independent, structured and systematic way of thinking and working characterize you.
  • Business fluent German and English, good teamwork and communication skills as well as enjoyment of experimental work complete your profile.

What you can expect

  • A cooperative and open-minded team
  • A modern and internationally oriented working environment with room for independent work and creative participation
  • Research at a high international level at the forefront of 5G-/6G communication technologies and high-resolution radar sensor technology
  • Close contacts with domestic and foreign universities as well as with industry and public clients
  • Professional and personal development opportunities through a wide range of training programs
  • Extensive additional benefits such as a company pension scheme (VBL), a subsidy for the job ticket and weekly sports activities (e.g. Pilates)
  • A family-friendly workplace with offers for the compatibility of family and career

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
