Student Assistant "Silicon Materials & Epitaxial Wafers"

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1,400 employees work towards a sustainable, economical, safe and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our research focus on energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company spin-offs and global collaborations, we are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system.

Would you like to play an active role in shaping the energy transition and be part of a highly motivated team? Then let us contribute to this together with material and process development for silicon solar cells.

In the "Silicon Materials & Epitaxial Wafers" group, we conduct research on silicon and germanium-based materials. To this end, various methods of material production are being further developed, such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or electrochemical porosification. We operate several facilities and laboratories that enable the production of high-purity, epitaxially grown silicon and germanium wafers. We pursue this work both in publicly funded projects and in bilateral projects with industrial partners. In addition to processing and system development, our main focus is on the versatile characterization of the wafers produced. Both structural analysis and electrical measurements are used here.

For our group "Silicon Materials & Epitaxial Wafers" we are looking for a student assistant with the opportunity to write a bachelor / master or diploma thesis as soon as possible.

What you will do

  • Your tasks will include the production of silicon and germanium wafers as part of publicly funded projects as well as for our industrial customers.

  • You will independently carry out various measurements for material characterization, e.g. atomic force microscopy (AFM), defect analyses, layer thickness measurements, as well as the creation of reciprocal space maps (RSM) using high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD).

  • You will examine and evaluate scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of porous silicon using image processing software.

  • You will document and present the results both internally and externally.

  • You will assist with administrative tasks.

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying physics, chemistry, crystallography, materials science or a comparable subject.

  • You have a basic knowledge of physics and chemistry in the field of semiconductor materials. Previous knowledge of material characterization is helpful, but not essential.

  • You have strong analytical thinking skills and are skilled in practical laboratory work. Experience in operating machines is an advantage, but not a requirement.

  • You work on your tasks in a structured and thorough manner and are motivated to critically question your results.

  • It is important to you to get involved in your team and to achieve goals together in interdisciplinary cooperation.

  • You have basic Python programming skills or you have basic Python programming skills or are interested to familiarize yourself with it.

  • You are fluent in written and spoken English.

What you can expect

  •  You will work for one of the most popular employers on a par with the best.

  • Open-minded colleagues are happy to welcome new talent into their ranks.

  • We offer flexible working time models and give you the opportunity to work from home at times.

  • We also foster a cooperative working atmosphere and open communication.

  • We value equal opportunities and make room for diversity.

  • You can take part in attractive sports and health programs and after-work activities.

  • Remuneration is based on the level of your university degree.

The remuneration depends on the degree of your university education.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled people will be given preference if equally qualified.

Have we piqued your interest? Then apply online now with your detailed application documents. (incl. cover letter, CV, references/performance record) We look forward to getting to know you!
