Thesis »Investigation of the thermomechanical behaviour of a forged steel for use in large turbines«

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer IWM, 330 employees conduct research on materials and components with the aim of better understanding, developing, processing and using them. In our projects, we bridge the gap between the properties of materials and the durability, safety and function of technical systems.
We show ways and solutions for more energy efficiency and sustainability. After all, materials are crucial for climate neutrality, for the careful use of our planet's limited resources and for the sustainable transformation of our economy.

What you will do

In our group "Forming Processes", we deal with all issues relating to the optimization of forming processes and forming tools, develop models that describe material behaviour and determine relevant material and process parameters.

Varied tasks await you:

You will assist our employees in the development of a new strategy to accelerate the long-term tests on the thermomechanical simulator GLEEBLE and analyse the resulting properties of a forged steel used in large turbines. In addition, you will familiarize yourself with recent publications and literature to keep abreast of the latest developments in thermo-mechanical material behaviour. You will also assist our colleagues in the development of a machine learning tool for predicting the operating behaviour of forged shafts in large turbines.

What you bring to the table

Your professional background:

You are currently studying Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject and would like to work in the field of materials characterization alongside your studies. Ideally, you already have experience with experimental work and are enthusiastic about the opportunity to conduct research in a research institute on both scientific and industry-related topics.

Qualifications that complement your profile:

Thanks to your strong problem-solving skills, you are able to independently find solutions to complex problems and take a critical look at the issues. Ideally, you have also gained experience in programming and machine learning in the past. Your strong communication skills and ability to work in a team round off your profile and open doors for you to work at our institute.

What you can expect

Always something new:

Working at the Fraunhofer IWM means researching innovative topics in an established research institute. Thanks to our flat hierarchies and open working culture, you will always have the right support at your disposal.
