Thesis "Analysis of Quality and Performance Criteria for PV - Inverters"

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1,400 employees werk towards a sustainable, economical, safe and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our research focus on energy supply, distribution, storage and utilization. We are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company spin-offs and global collaborations.

For our department "Power Electronics and Grid Integration", we are looking for a student assistant with the opportunity to write a Bachelor's or Master's thesis.

The department "Power Electronics and Grid Integration" conducts research and development in the field of power converters for PV, battery and e-mobility applications as well as the integration of renewable energies. One focus of the research activities is on investigating the reliability of inverters and their components.

Building on previous research results, criteria for evaluating the quality and performance of PV inverters are to be analysed. For this purpose, the previous research results are to be summarized and supplemented by analysing PV field measurement data as part of a Bachelor's or Master's thesis. The aim is to summarize the critical Load conditions of PV inverters in a so-called mission profile and to create a catalog of criteria for evaluating their quality and performance.

What you will do

  • You will conduct literature research on quality- and performance-relevant component groups in PV inverters.
  • You will analyse PV field measurement data with regard to occurring load conditions and causes of faults.
  • You will define critical load conditions and develop a mission profile.
  • You will establish criteria for evaluating the quality and performance of PV inverters.
  • You will document and present your work and results.

What you bring to the table

  • You will conduct literature research on quality- and performance-relevant component groups in PV inverters.

  • You will analyse PV field measurement data with regard to occurring load conditions and causes of faults.

  • You will define critical load conditions and develop a mission profile.

  • You will establish criteria for evaluating the quality and performance of PV inverters.

  • You will document and present your work and results.

What you can expect

  • Exclusive Insight: By working together with the scientists in our department, you will gain insight into the day-to-day research and development at a research institute.

  • Research mix: We offer you the opportunity to combine experimental work with theory, thus applying and expanding the knowledge you gained during your studies.

  • Supervision: You will be supervised by scientists during your work and receive feedback on your progress.

  • Teamwork: You will gain experience of working in a team with our scientific and student employees and can contribute the experience you have already gained.

  • Working hours and location: We offer you the opportunity to flexibly adapt your working hours to your needs in consultation with your manager and to work from home from time to time.

  • Equal opportunities: We value equal opportunities and embrace diversity.

  • After work: Celebrate yourself and your colleagues at after-work events or our annual employee parties, such as the hiking day.

In addition to the thesis, a contract is agreed for work as a research assistant. The remuneration for this is based on the level of the university degree.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, belief, disability, sexual orientation and identity.
