Thesis: "Characterization and Evaluation of AEM Water Electrolysis Cells"

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1,400 employees are working towards a sustainable, economic, safe and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our research priorities of energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company.

For our group “Electrolysis”, we are looking for a student assistant with the opportunity to write a bachelor's or master's thesis on the subject of “Characterization and evaluation of catalysts in AEM water electrolysis cells under the influence of magnetic fields” as soon as possible.

Do you want to actively shape the energy transition and write your thesis in this field? With us, you will work on realizing this goal. Together, we plan, build and operate various plants and test stands in the field of water electrolysis. In our new research field, AEM electrolysis, we are currently putting a novel test stand into operation to measure electrolytic cells under the influence of external magnetic fields.

What you will do

  • You work in a scientific, EU-funded project to research the influence of magnetic fields on specific processes in AEM electrolysers.
  • You plan, carry out and scientifically evaluate series of measurements. This includes electrochemical investigations of the test cell using common characterization methods (U-I courses, impedance spectroscopy), as well as finding an activation routine for the cell.
  • You will develop measurement scripts to investigate AEM electrolytic cells.
  • You will support the operation and further development of the test stand.
  • You will support scientific work such as literature research or structured documentation and presentation of work and measurement data.

What you bring to the table

  • You are an enrolled student in a technical or scientific field.
  • You have manual skills and a basic technical understanding or would like to delve deeper into this.
  • You have already carried out experimental laboratory work and measurement tests with their scientific evaluation.
  • Ideally, you have basic knowledge in the field of hydrogen technologies.
  • It is important to you to contribute to your team and to achieve goals together in interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • You plan and complete tasks independently and to a high standard.
  • You are familiar with MS Office. Prior experience with Origin, MS Visio, and Autodesk Inventor is helpful but not mandatory.
  • You have already demonstrated your very good German (C1) and good English (at least B2) language skills.

What you can expect

  • Exclusive insight: By working together with the scientists in our department, you will gain insights into the day-to-day research and development work at a research institute.
  • Laboratory infrastructure: At Fraunhofer ISE, we work with state-of-the-art systems and equipment so that research projects can be carried out using the latest technology. (Note: only use this if the position is in a laboratory!)
  • Research mix: You will have the opportunity to combine experimental work with theory, thus applying and expanding the knowledge you gained during your studies.
  • Supervision: You will be supervised by scientists during your work and receive feedback on your progress.
  • Teamwork: You will gain experience in working in a team with our scientific and student staff and can contribute the experience you have already gained.
  • Working hours and location: We offer you the opportunity to flexibly adjust your working hours to your needs and to work from home from time to time.
  • Equal opportunities: We value equal opportunities and embrace diversity.
  • After work: Celebrate yourself and your colleagues at after-work events or our annual employee parties, such as the hiking day.

In addition to the thesis, a contract is agreed for work as a research assistant. The remuneration for this is based on the level of the university degree.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.

Have we piqued your interest? Then apply online now with your detailed application documents (including cover letter, CV, reference/performance record). We look forward to getting to know you!
