Thesis "Simulation of reaction and separation processes in the Power to Liquids Context"

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, Germany is the largest solar research institute in Europe. With a staff of about 1400, we are committed to promoting a sustainable, economic, secure and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energy sources. We contribute to this through our main research areas of energy provision, energy distribution, energy storage and energy utilization. Through outstanding research results and successful industrial projects, spin-off companies and global collaborations, we are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system.

For our group "Synthesis Products: Separation Processes and Production Technologies" group, we are looking for an intern or student assistant with the opportunity to write a bachelor's, master's or diploma thesis on the topic of "Simulation of reaction and separation processes in the power to liquids context" from 01.10.2024.
Would you like to play an active role in shaping the energy transition and gain practical experience during your studies? With us, you will work in an open team on a forward-looking topic in the field of renewable energies. Our "Sustainable Synthesis Products" department at Fraunhofer ISE deals with the power-to-liquids concept, i.e. the conversion of "green" hydrogen from renewable electricity into sustainable energy carriers, chemicals and fuels. In addition to efficient transportation and storage properties, liquid energy carriers also offer the opportunity to provide an alternative to fossil fuels in sectors that rely on the use of carbon-based fuels. For the energy-efficient and economical production of sustainable synthesis products, innovative process concepts based on the raw materials C02 and hydrogen are also investigated in our group using simulations. The latest simulation software is used for this.

What you will do

  • You will work in a dynamic team of students and engineers.

  • Your tasks will initially include literature research and familiarization with the fundamentals of reaction and process engineering.

  • You will familiarize yourself with the Aspen Plus and/or Ansys Fluent software.

  • You will design and model various reactor concepts for the production of a hydrogen carrier or sustainable fuel.

  • You will evaluate the investigated concepts on the basis of your simulation results. You will also take economic aspects into account.

  • You will present your results to our group and optionally summarize them in your final thesis.

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying process engineering, chemical engineering or a comparable subject.
  • You have knowledge in the field of process engineering, ideally in thermodynamics and reaction engineering.
  • Experience with the simulation of process engineering processes (process simulation or CFD) is an advantage but not essential.
  • You work independently and with commitment.
  • You are experienced in using Microsoft Office.
  • You can express yourself confidently in German or English.

What you can expect

  • You will work with one of the most popular employers on par with the best.

  • Open-minded colleagues are happy to welcome new talents into their ranks.

  • We offer flexible working time models and give you the opportunity to occasionally work from home.

  • We foster a cooperative working atmosphere and open communication.

  • We value equal opportunities and allow room for diversity.

  • We offer attractive sport and health programs and after-work activities.

The remuneration depends on the degree of the university education.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

Have we sparked your interest? Then apply online now with your meaningful application documents (including CV, cover letter and, if applicable, certificates). We are looking forward to meeting you.
