Postdoc (M/F/D) - Super-Resolution Microscopy and Cell Biology

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The High Resolution and Automated Microscopy department of Prof. Stefan Jakobs at the Göttingen site of the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP invites applications for a postdoc position, focusing on super-resolution microscopy and cell biology.

At our Göttingen location of the Fraunhofer ITMP, Translational Neuroinflammation and Automated Microscopy TNM, we use super-resolution microscopy techniques combined with genome editing and advanced image analysis to enhance our understanding of cellular phenotypes in various diseases and to identify potential drug targets. We are a multidisciplinary team of biologists, physicists, and data scientists that intends to create added value for clinical as well as pharmacological research by using super-resolution microscopy methods.

Modern microscopy techniques such as STED microscopy enable the analysis of protein localizations and distributions at the nanometer scale. Thus, previously unknown changes in the structure and dynamics of protein clusters within cells of diseased patients can be investigated.

The detection of clinically relevant abnormalities will contribute to a better understanding of cellular changes in a variety of diseases. As a postdoc in our department, you will handle patient samples and screen them for phenotypes to identify unknown structural changes behind biochemical defects. In addition, you will generate genome edited cellular model systems to examine selected diseases.

What you will do

  • Investigate samples of diseased patients with super-resolution microscopy techniques
  • Identify new structural phenotypes as a basis for drug screens
  • Execute CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing and create modified cell lines as model systems for diseases
  • Cooperate with clinicians and industry partners to investigate the connection between structural changes, biochemical and pathological phenotypes in patients
  • Work in an interdisciplinary and international environment
  • Contribute to the preparation of presentations and research publications

What you bring to the table

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with a strong interest in applied research, who is enthusiastic and enjoys working in a multidisciplinary team.

  • PhD in biology, biochemistry or related fields
  • Excellent knowledge of cell biology and molecular biology
  • An interest in various super-resolution microscopy techniques
  • Experience in the use of genome editing techniques
  • Publications in scientific journals
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
  • Advanced communication skills

What you can expect

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is initially limited until Dezember 31, 2025 and also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
