Postdoc (m/w/d) - Super-Resolution Microscopy and Cell Biology

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology (ITMP), Branch for Translational Neuroinflammation and Automated Microscopy (TNM) in Göttingen invites applications for the position as a Postdoc (M/F/D) - Super-Resolution Microscopy and Cell Biology

The Fraunhofer branch “Translational Neuroinflammation and Automated Microscopy” (TNM) in Göttingen is part of the “Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology” (ITMP). The department “High Resolution and Automated Microscopy” focusses on the application and automation of super-resolution fluorescence microscopy techniques for drug discovery.

Modern microscopy techniques such as STED microscopy enable the analysis of protein localizations and distributions at the nanometer scale. Thus, previously unknown changes in the structure and dynamics of protein clusters within cells of diseased patients can be investigated. This will help to find innovative ways for early detection, diagnosis, and therapy. The successful candidate will work in close cooperation with industry partners, apply state-of-the-art microscopy as well as molecular biology techniques, in particular genome-editing.

What you will do

  • Design workflows that enable the use of nanoscopy techniques for pharmaceutical drug research.
  • Establish nanoscopy as a method for high-content screening and the characterization of potential drug candidates for clinical application.
  • Work on application-oriented nanoscopy projects.
  • Use CRISPR/Cas to label target-proteins and investigate disease-causing mutations.
  • Coordinate projects with partners from biomedicine and industry.
  • Evaluate high-resolution image data.
  • Supervise PhD students and technical staff.

What you bring to the table

Highly motivated and have a strong interest to work at the interface between research, medicine, and industry. Candidates furthermore:

  • Hold a PhD in Biology, Biochemistry or related fields.
  • Have excellent knowledge of cell biology and molecular biology.
  • Have experience in the use of CRISPR/Cas.
  • Have experience with fluorescence microscopy. Experience with high-resolution microscopy methods is advantageous
  • Have experience in digital image processing.
  • Can prove their expertise with publications in scientific journals.
  • Are proficient in the English language (written and spoken).

Your professional qualifications are complemented by a quick grasp, structured and independent way of working and a good team spirit.

What you can expect

  • Good work-life balance thanks to flexible working hours with flexitime model
  • 30 days of vacation as well as Christmas and New Year's Eve as work-free days
  • Personal pension scheme (VBL) and other benefits from the public sector, e.g. annual special payment
  • Capital-forming benefits
  • Subsidy for the Deutschland-Ticket job ticket
  • Personal development opportunities through a wide range of further training opportunities
  • Corporate benefits: offers from well-known manufacturers and brands
