In the "Fibre Optic Sensor Systems" department of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (Goslar branch), the focus is on application-oriented research and development of innovative sensors that are used in a wide range of different applications, such as battery safety. The department is located on the EnergyCampus in Goslar in the immediate vicinity of the Energy Storage Technologies Research Centre (EST) and Clausthal University of Technology. The "Energy Storage Sensors" group conducts research into innovative (fiber) optical sensors for monitoring lithium-ion batteries in mobile and stationary applications. The spectrum of activities ranges from the production of optical sensors to the testing of battery cells, modules and systems. What you will do

  • Management and motivation of employees

  • Acquisition of publicly funded projects and direct orders from industry

  • Customer-specific and research project-related testing of batteries at cell, module and system level

  • Development and production of measurement systems for battery testing

  • Development of (fiber) optical sensor systems for internal and external condition characterization of lithium-ion batteries

  • Scientific/technical support and further development of the battery test laboratory

  • Development, implementation and documentation of test procedures within a team

  • Project management and collaboration in national and international research projects (third-party funded projects and industrial research projects)

  • Publication of research results
     

The position offers the possibility of a doctorate.

 

What you bring to the table

  • Completed scientific university degree / engineer / master's degree in the fields of mechanical/process engineering, physics, electrical engineering, computer science or similar

  • Sound experimental and theoretical knowledge in the field of battery technology

  • Experience in the field of cell and module testing of lithium-ion batteries is an advantage

  • Experience in one (or more) of the fields of (optical) measurement sensor technology, sensor data processing (e.g. artificial intelligence / machine learning), programming (e.g. LabVIEW, C++) is an advantage

  • Analytical thinking and comprehensive mathematical knowledge

  • Experience in the acquisition of publicly funded projects (BMBF, BMWK, EU), direct R&D contracts from industry is an advantage

  • Experience in staff management is desirable

  • Ability to present research results flawlessly in English and German and to publish scientifically

  • Willingness to travel domestically and abroad 20%

The position is initially limited to 2 years. An extension is explicitly desired.

 

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
