Student Assistant - Python programming Toolbox for real-time visualization of geometric voxel model

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Additive Manufacturing Technologies IAPT in Hamburg is one of the leading institutions in the field of Additive Production. With its focus on the industrialization of additive technologies, sustainable innovations are created along the entire process chain. We focus primarily on socially relevant sectors such as Life Sciences, Energy, Mobility and Defense. Our research ranges from component design and processes to factory planning and digitalization: we take the entire production route into account. Numerous spin-offs and patent applications underline the value of our innovations.

Join the industry and public institutions in developing the Additive Manufacturing of the future!

Background
Directed Energy Deposition is an Additive Manufacturing process that employs a 6-axis industrial robot coupled with a deposition head to manufacture components in a layer-by-layer fashion. The advantage of such a system lies in the dexterity of the robot that enables fabrication of components in multi-direction and with higher deposition rates. The slicing process is usually carried out with a constant layer or slice thickness. This assumption, however, does not reflect the real process phenomena where the changing thermal, kinematic and boundary conditions lead to a variable deposition geometry. Therefore, a voxel-based geometrical simulation model to predict the actual deposition volume has to be developed that considers the following factors: Path planning strategies, actual working distance between pre-built layer and deposition nozzle, part-geometry related factors (corners, T-sections, etc.), actual velocity of the robot and powder utilization.
