Student* with Thesis (optional) Identification and Modeling of Electrolyzer Components

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Who we are ...
Our primary focuses at Fraunhofer IWES are on wind energy and hydrogen technologies. Our institute is home to more than 300 scientists and employees as well as over 100 students from over 30 countries pursuing careers in applied research and development at nine sites. We secure investments in technological developments through validation, shorten innovation cycles, accelerate certification procedures, and increase planning accuracy by means of innovative measurement methods.

This team needs your support ...
You will be part of the »Application Center for Integration of Local Energy Systems« at our site in Hamburg, but it would also be possible to work in Bremerhaven and be supported online by the team. At present, our team consists of eight research associates and several students. We focus on the modelling and control of decentralized, local energy systems for network integration. One of our main research interests is cross-sector applications with hydrogen systems. On the control side, our current research emphasis is on grid-forming control for the integration of hybrid power plants including large-scale electrolyzes. Become an active member of the team; we are keen to hear your ideas! As an international oriented IWES-team, we highly appreciate an open exchange, whether this be in German or English. Respectful cooperation is also very important to us. You are wondering what you can bring to the team?

What you will do

These duties await you ...
You will analyze the available data from the Hydrogen Lab Bremerhaven (HLB) and implement a connection routine between the data handling system and the modeling program. Thereby you will improve and validate existing models and develop new ones using the data from the HLB, for example through grey-box modeling or parameter identification. You will also identify data and model gaps for model-based control design. From this, you will build a model library using the data from the HLB, which will enable optimized system operation and control. Sounds like a lot? Do not worry, you will be supported by your colleagues in the team.

What you bring to the table

What is your background?
You are studying Process Engineering, Renewable Energies, Chemical Engineering or something similar in a Bachelor's or Master's program? You have a basic understanding of electrochemical processes and hydrogen production? You already have some experience with data and grey box modeling, preferably in MATLAB? You understand and speak English? Great, we are looking forward to your application!

What you can expect

What we can offer you ...
We offer various opportunities to join us as a student. Whether it is an internship, where you gain a comprehensive insight into the areas of work, or the role of a student assistant, which is easy to combine with your studies. Are you looking for an exciting topic for your thesis and do you want to delve deeply into a topic scientifically? Together, we will find the right path for you! We know that studying can also be very demanding and requires a certain level of flexibility. That is no problem here, as – in agreement with your colleagues – you can decide flexibly what days and hours to work. Temporarily, you can even work remotely, depending on the job.
