Research Engineer - Over-the-Air Testing of Mobile Communication and Navigation Systems (GNSS)

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ( currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros. 

The research work of the Electronic Measurement and Signal Processing (EMS) department focuses on the measurement and modeling of electromagnetic wave propagation, signal processing of multi-antenna systems in mobile communications and radar, UWB and millimeter-wave radar sensor technology, and the localization of mobile terminals. 


The Team Over-the-Air Research and Testing focuses on testing of communication terminals related to MIMO, 5G, GNSS, V2X/I. For this purpose we use test methods such as Wave Field Synthesis or Wireless Cable. Furthermore, the team conducts performance tests of SatCom-On-The-Move (SOTM) terminals for international industry partners and satellite operators.
The FORTE test facility ( represents an essential tool for our work. FORTE is the only test facility in the EU that can provide far-field testing for SOTM antennas in a repeatable and controllable manner. FORTE is recognized as an Authorized Test Entity ATE of the Global VSAT Forum (GVF).


What you will do

As part of the team Over-the-Air Research and Testing, you will conceptualize, develop, and implement test and emulation environments for communications and navigation systems. The work includes practical tasks such as handling measurement equipment and emulation hardware. Your developments will be integrated into industry and publicly funded research projects.


What you bring to the table

  • A scientific degree in electrical engineering, communications engineering, computer science or a related field of study
  • Good knowledge of mobile communications as well as high frequency technology and digital signal processing
  • Experience in software development, e.g. Python, MatLab, C/C++ or a comparable programming language
  • Knowledge in the area of network technology is an advantage
  • Enthusiasm for scientific issues and scientific working methods independently and as part of a team
  • Very good English language skills (written and spoken)


The position is also suitable for career starters with corresponding previous knowledge and experience from internships, student research projects or theses. In addition to the employment relationship, the opportunity to prepare for a PhD is possible on the basis of the results of the scientific activity.
