The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena conducts applied research in optical system technology on behalf of the industry and as part of publicly funded joint projects. The range of services offered by the Fraunhofer IOF includes system solutions, starting with new design concepts, through the development of technologies, manufacturing and measuring methods to the construction of prototypes and pilot series for applications in the wavelength range from millimeter to nanometer.

We are looking for a Scientific Instructor for the department of Optical and Mechanical System Design in the field of design and simulation of optical systems. The scientific and technological focus of the department is on micro-optical systems as well as high-performance and special optics – ranging from automotive to space applications.

What you will do

As a Scientific Instructor, you will support the department management in the strategic and operative development of the area of expertise Design and Simulation of Optical Systems. You will analyze the scientific and market environment and derive development opportunities. In addition, you will support the operational implementation in the areas of science marketing as well as in the acquisition and management of strategic projects. Your area of responsibility includes the following tasks in particular:

Conducting research (publications, patent searches, calls for tenders) and processing the findings as well as deriving development and marketing potentials for departmental topics
Supporting the acquisition and management of strategic projects from public and industrial clients
Preparing and coordinating trade fair exhibits and marketing activities
Preparing and holding workshops and strategy days
Supporting quality management of the department

What you bring to the table

You have a university degree (M.SC.) in physics or engineering ideally with a completed doctorate.
You have experience in research and development of optical systems or related topics.
You are confident in writing texts such as scientific publications as well as grant proposals.
Ideally, you have experience in science management or science marketing.
You have excellent presentation skills.
Your strengths include a high degree of initiative, motivation, and strategic thinking.
Since Fraunhofer IOF works on an international level, we require a very good command of written and spoken English.

The weekly working time is 39 hours.The position can also be filled on a part-time basis.The position is initially limited to 2 years with possibility for prolongation. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).
