Speculative application for students »Imaging and Sensing« (IOF-2023-14)

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ( currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena conducts application-oriented research in optical systems-engineering on behalf of industry and within the framework of publicly funded joint projects. The services offered by Fraunhofer IOF include system solutions, ranging from new design concepts, the development of new technologies, manufacturing, and measurement processes, to the construction of prototypes and pilot series in the wavelength range from millimeters to nanometers.

Fraunhofer IOF develops innovative optical measurement methods and systems according to customer-specific requirements. These include imaging optical 3D measurement systems with high metrological accuracy for a wide range of applications. Measurement volumes from a few cubic centimeters to several cubic meters can be acquired with measurement frequencies of up to 55,000 3D data sets per second. Furthermore, miniaturized micro-optical imaging systems based on single-aperture and multi-aperture systems are developed. Manufacturing can be carried out on a wafer scale and directly implemented on an industrial scale.

Fraunhofer IOF also has a wide range of optical and non-optical measurement systems. Examples are interferometers using CGHs (computer generated holograms) or a computer tomograph with a resolution in the micrometer range.
