Speculative application for the department Emerging Technologies (IOF-2023-73)

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena conducts applied research in optical system technology on behalf of the industry and as part of publicly funded joint projects. The range of services offered by the Fraunhofer IOF includes system solutions, starting with new design concepts, through the development of technologies, manufacturing and measuring methods to the construction of prototypes and pilot series for applications in the wavelength range from millimeter to nanometer. The Fraunhofer IOF is also pioneering applied optical quantum technology research and offers innovative solutions for science and industry wherever quantum systems have the potential for revolutionary applications.
In the area of emerging technologies at Fraunhofer IOF, the focus of research and development lies currently on two topics:

Optical quantum technologies
Fraunhofer IOF is a pioneer in applied research on quantum photonics for scientific and industrial applications. This includes, for example, tap-proof quantum communication, low-noise quantum imaging systems, and advanced ion traps for quantum computers. Fraunhofer IOF integrates, optimizes, and miniaturizes quantum technology systems.

Active and Adaptive Optics
Fraunhofer IOF develops deformable mirrors to influence the wavefront actively to improve the system properties in a targeted manner. Our expertise is used for laser and quantum communication systems between ground stations and geostationary satellites, for the compensation of image perturbations in space telescopes, or focus adaptation and focus tracking in laser material processing. The mirrors can be equipped with up to 10,000 actuators and are controlled in real-time based on wavefront measurement technologies.
Come and join our department as a scientific or technical employee.
