Speculative application for the department Laser and Fiber Technology (IOF-2022-58) 1

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena conducts applied research in optical system technology on behalf of the industry and as part of publicly funded joint projects. The range of services offered by the Fraunhofer IOF includes system solutions, starting with new design concepts, through the development of technologies, manufacturing and measuring methods to the construction of prototypes and pilot series for applications in the wavelength range from millimeter to nanometer. The Fraunhofer IOF is also pioneering applied optical quantum technology research and offers innovative solutions for science and industry wherever quantum systems have the potential for revolutionary applications.

For the development of high-power fiber lasers with diffraction-limited beam quality, Fraunhofer IOF has expertise in laser physics, fiber and optical design, glass chemistry, thermooptics, packaging and interconnection technology for fiber lasers, and the development of efficient fiber couplers and beam delivery systems.

Fraunhofer IOF covers the entire technology chain in its fiber technology center, ranging from the design and manufacture of laser-active preforms and fibers, preparation and characterization, to system integration of laser-active special fibers and fiber-optic components. This is essential for the design and application of cw and pulsed fiber laser systems of the highest beam quality (M2 < 1.2) with output powers up to the multi-kilowatt range. By operating technologies on an industrial scale, it is possible to quickly transfer new solutions into applications.

Fraunhofer IOF is one of the strongest research institutes in this field with global visibility and numerous unique technological features.
