Research Associate HPC Machine Learning

The Fraunhofer ITWM is one of currently 76 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. We, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM, see it as our task to further develop key technologies, to provide innovative impulses, and to implement them in practice together with industrial partners. In doing so, we do not only want to build the bridge between the real and the virtual world ourselves, but also to be the link between university mathematics and its practical implementation. Therefore, the close connection to the Department of Mathematics at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern plays a special role.


What you will do


You will enrich our interdisciplinary team with your HPC expertise in the development of distributed machine learning algorithms within publicly funded research projects and in the practical implementation of Machine Learning solutions for our industrial customers.


The Machine Learning group at CC-HPC very successfully occupies the interface between High Performance Computing (HPC) and Machine Learning (ML). We develop scalable ML solutions in close collaboration with hardware manufacturers, large-scale data centers and industrial users.


In national and international research collaborations, we conduct research on all levels of distributed ML systems: from new numerical optimization methods and communication protocols, to novel hardware accelerators, to the application of ML algorithms to solve problems on very large data volumes. 


What you bring to the table


  • A successfully completed scientific university degree in computer science or natural and engineering sciences 
  • Very good knowledge of Linux as well as practical experience with the use (e.g. scientific computing) and administration of high-performance computers (HPC systems)
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas: Job scheduler (preferably SLURM), containerization of software stacks, distributed file systems
  • Good knowledge of at least one classical programming language, e.g. C/C++, Python
  • Good knowledge of English, both written and spoken

Knowledge of machine learning is not required.
