Masterthesis: GPU-Accelerated Gaussian Mixture Models for Real-Time Adaptive Manufacturing

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation IOSB, we transform cutting-edge scientific findings into technical innovations – contributing to shaping the future.

Here’s how you’ll make a difference:

Collaborative research centers (SFBs) are the "Champions League" of the DFG-funded projects (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). They are spanned over 12 years comprised of a variety of W3 University professors along with their postdocs and PhDs. You will contribute to SFB1574 - the Circular Factory, which explores how future production systems can seamlessly integrate linear and circular processes, enabling used products to be transformed into new generations.

What you will do

  • Implement GPU-accelerated Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) learning in PyTorch
  • Optimize training and inference of GMMs for large, high-dimensional datasets
  • Explore parallelization strategies to leverage modern GPU architectures
  • Benchmark GPU-based implementations against CPU-based approaches
  • Evaluate the applicability of developed methods for real-time adaptive manufacturing data

What you bring to the table

  • Enrollment in Mathematics, Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Solid knowledge of Linear Algebra and Analysis
  • Experience with PyTorch and GitLab
  • Curiosity and problem-solving skills (a little Google-Fu is helpful!)

What you can expect

  • Central location: Only a few minutes' walk from KIT Campus South and very good public transport connections.
  • Co-authorship: Opportunity to be a co-author on resulting publications.
  • Hands-on research projects: Collaboration with industry partners and application of research results in real-life scenarios.
  • Individual supervision: Benefit from our professional accompaniment and an open, communicative exchange within the team.
  • Exiting tasks and creative freedom: Take responsibility and contribute your own ideas.
  • Additional opportunities: Possibility for student employment.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
