The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

Its Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI researches and develops special problem solutions at the interfaces of medicine, life sciences and engineering.

For our research group »Preclinical Validation« at the Leipzig site we are looking for a doctoral student to join our team as soon as possible. As part of the Department of Vaccines and Infection Models, the working group develops and investigates drug and vaccine candidates via cell culture experiments and in various animal studies. One research focus is the development and efficacy testing of innovative vaccines for humans and animals.

What you will do

  • As part of the project in which your dissertation will be involved, innovative drug candidates against viral and bacterial pathogens will be investigated. The project is multidisciplinary and involves close collaboration with an industrial partner.
  • Your research will focus on the analysis of efficacy, cytotoxicity and mechanisms of action, both in vitro at the cellular level and in vivo in a mouse model.
  • You will communicate your research results by writing publications as well as orally at regular colloquia and at specialist meetings or conferences.
  • You will actively pass on your knowledge by supervising Bachelor and Master students.

What you bring to the table

  • You have successfully completed a scientific diploma or master's degree in biology, biochemistry, virology or a comparable field of study.
  • You have already gained practical experience in working with cell culture and molecular biological experimental methods. Good knowledge of virology is an advantage.
  • Ideally, you already have some experience with animal studies and a FELASA-B qualification; however, this is not a prerequisite.
  • You are very confident in communicating in written and spoken English and enjoy working in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Your working style is characterized by commitment and initiative and you approach new challenges independently and flexibly. Thanks to your strong organizational skills, you always maintain an overview of your tasks.

What you can expect

  • At Fraunhofer IZI, creative research freedom meets real added value for society through close links to industry. Through your commitment, you will help shape the medicine of tomorrow and gain exciting insights into the leading organization for application-oriented research in Europe.
  • A PhD in a challenging interdisciplinary work environment with access to state-of-the-art research technologies and the opportunity to actively shape your field of work and advance your ideas in national and international scientific collaborations
  • Comprehensive further training opportunities and support services as part of your doctorate - further information on our doctoral program can be found here.
  • Flexible working hours and home office options, taking into account your professional and private challenges
  • A wide range of support services for balancing family and career (e. g. parent-child office, childcare facility at the institute)
