Master Thesis in Quantum Error Mitigation
Safe Intelligence — this forms the core brand of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS. Connected cognitive systems drive innovation in many sectors, including mobility, healthcare, and automation in industry. Disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing play a key role here. Fraunhofer IKS is conducting research to ensure that these applications are reliable and verifiably safe. We consider resilience and intelligence to be part of the same process.
What you will do
Quantum Computing is a novel, disruptive technology with the potential to speed up or to enable the solution of a variety of problems. An essential building block in a future success of quantum computing is the treatment of errors and decoherence that unavoidably occur in quantum devices. So far, this treatment is mostly handled in two distinct phases: NISQ- with quantum error mitigation (QEM) and fault-tolerant regime with quantum error correction (QEC). You will research the combination of error mitigation and error correction primitives. Thereby, the applications of quantum computing that this group is working on is diverse, ranging from various machine learning methods over optimization problems to quantum chemistry. Possible topics include the integration of QEM in partially error corrected protocols and the utilization of QEC subroutines for QEM.
