Master Thesis in Quantum Optimization / Quantum Machine Learning

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Safe Intelligence - this forms the core brand of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS. Connected cognitive systems drive innovation in many sectors, including mobility, healthcare, and automation in industry. Disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing play a key role here. Fraunhofer IKS is conducting research to ensure that these applications are reliable and verifiably safe. We consider resilience and intelligence to be part of the same process.

What you will do

Quantum computing is predicted to be a disruptive, emerging technology with potential significant impact in many industrial areas. At Fraunhofer IKS we work on a series of different projects related to enabling robust and reliable applications of quantum computing (link). We have expertise in various aspects of QC ranging from quantum chemistry to optimization and machine learning topics. We offer interested students to participate in this cutting-edge research via master thesis projects in different research directions:

  • Optimization and machine learning with quantum-inspired methods like tensor networks
  • Characterization of the problem graphs resulting from encoding combinatorial optimization problems
  • Evaluation and advancement of methods for the robustness certification of neural networks with deterministic or stochastic methods
  • Adaptation of near-team and fault-tolerant algorithms for quantum sampling algorithms to Bayesian learning paradigm
  • Quantum-assisted training algorithms for sparse machine learning models.

What you bring to the table

  • Formal conditions to start a master thesis on a German university are fulfilled
  • Experience in Python programming
  • Knowledge of Machine Learning or Optimization Algorithms
  • Knowledge of Quantum Algorithms
  • First experience with Qiskit or Pennylane frameworks
  • Familiarity with working with Linux OS and git
  • Interest in applied research and transfer of innovative methods in industrial applications
  • Especially suitable for M.Sc. QST, M.Sc. Computer science, M.Sc. Physics or similar.

What you can expect

  • Nice supervisors, a good atmosphere, hybrid working style
  • Participation in a dynamic team with innovative task areas
  • Practical approach to your studies.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
