Master Thesis on Reliability of LLM for the Safety Critical Process

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Safe Intelligence - this forms the core brand of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS. Connected cognitive systems drive innovation in many sectors, including mobility, healthcare, and automation in industry. Disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing play a key role here. Fraunhofer IKS is conducting research to ensure that these applications are reliable and verifiably safe. We consider resilience and intelligence to be part of the same process.

What you will do

The use of advanced language processing technologies is becoming increasingly prevalent in various settings, both personal and professional. However, their influence on the development processes and assessments of critical components remains uncertain. While these technologies could improve efficiency, there are concerns regarding potential drawbacks, such as a decline in skills and critical thinking.
This study aims to explore the effects of incorporating these technologies into existing critical processes. Participants will engage in a web-based exercise, completing tasks with and without the support of the advanced language processing technology.

Responsibility:

  • Conduct literature reviews to identify existing research and methodologies related to LLMs in safety-critical contexts.
  • Design and implementation of the experiment
  • Build a web-based experimental platform to submit the tests to the people
  • Deploy LLM on the platform
  • Evaluating the results of the experiment
  • Develop and maintain documentation for the experimental process and platform.
  • Design user interfaces and user experience flows for the web-based platform.
  • Collaborate with safety professionals to gather insights on safety-critical processes.

What you bring to the table

For that the ideal candidate is:

  • A master's student in Computer Science or similar
  • Experienced with developing and deploying Web-Based applications
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or similar
  • Familiar with web development frameworks (e.g., React, Django, Flask)
  • Understanding machine learning concepts, particularly related to LLMs is a plus
  • Experienced with cloud services (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud) for deploying applications is a plus
  • Knowledged of user experience (UX) principles to design an intuitive platform
  • Familiar with safety-critical systems or standards (e.g., ISO 26262, DO-178C) is a plus but not mandatory.

What you can expect

  • Nice supervisors, a good atmosphere, hybrid working style
  • Participation in a dynamic team with innovative task areas
  • Practical approach to your studies.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.
