Research Associate / Postdoc in the field of Quantum technologies

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

Fraunhofer EMFT conducts applied research on sensors and actuators. The 120 employees in Munich, Oberpfaffenhofen and Regensburg possess long-term experience and extensive know-how in microelectronics and microsystem technology, ranging from semiconductor processes and MEMS technologies to 3D integration and foil electronics. These technologies form the basis for the other competence areas at Fraunhofer EMFT: innovative sensor solutions, safe and secure electronics, and micro dosing.

Fraunhofer EMFT in Munich is part of the ”Munich Quantum Valley“, together with the Munich Universities TUM & LMU, the Max Planck-Society, other Fraunhofer institutes and various industrial partners.

In this context, the FhG EMFT is aiming at a mature pilot-line manufacturing of superconducting qubit chips in close cooperation with the Walter Meißner Institute (Bavarian Academy of Science). Quantum computing systems based on other qubit platforms like ion-traps are also supported.

What you will do

Actively support the research group in process technology, fabrication and management of quantum computer device components and systems. In addition, you will work on the ongoing and newly upcoming research projects in the field of quantum computing and focus on at least two of the following specific assignments:

  • Micro-nano technology development for manufacturing, scaling and integration of qubit chips within a pilot-line, in particular based on superconducting qubits
  • Application of hetero-integrated technologies for qubits

  • Design of electronic components and systems for the operation of quantum computing systems with >20 qubits

  • Testing and characterization of our fabricated quantum devices under cryogenic conditions

What you bring to the table

  • Doctorate in physics, electrical engineering or a related field

  • Professional experience and knowledge in the field of semiconductor technologies, and in the processing of semiconductor wafers

  • Experience in the field of quantum technologies and/or cryo-electronics is an advantage

  • Self-responsible and structured way of working

  • Taking responsibility for device development and fabrication, and/or for major microelectronics clean-room equipment

  • Preparation and analysis of research results, their publication in peer-reviewed journals and their presentation at international conferences

  • Supervision of Master and PhD student theses and internships

  • Enjoy working in a team

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new skills independently (scientific working methods, social competence)

What you can expect

We offer you a challenging and varied job with responsibility and freedom.

At EMFT, we value commitment and creativity. You can set your own priorities, realize your ideas in the team and in the projects and develop professionally and personally. We support you in your personal career development with flexible working hours, a co-child office and other offers for a successful work-life balance
