Senior Research Scientist (PhD position) in Trustworthy AI

The Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS conducts applied research into the topics of tomorrow: artificial intelligence, cognitive systems and intelligent software architectures for autonomous systems. Our primary focus is safety-critical applications in the areas of Industry 4.0 and automotive, as well as mobile machines and commercial vehicles. We thus develop dependable software technologies for people. For instance, we examine how artificial intelligence can be validated so that it can be utilized even in autonomous vehicles, human-robot interaction and medical instruments. That means we’re are paving the way for a dependable digital world.


What you will do

You conduct cutting-edge AI research with special focus on reliable and safe AI. This included subjects of deep learning for time-series data analysis, reinforcement learning, causal inference, decision support and treatment effect analysis, out of distribution generalization, and similar topics. Our main focus of application is in healthcare, clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients. 


If you are interested in the mathematics of ML, you have the opportunity to develop novel methodologies to address challenges in this field.

If you are interested in applications of ML, you can join us to develop novel ML solutions for real-world problems.


What you bring to the table

  • M.Sc. degree in computer science, mathematics, bioinformatics, physics  or related fields (final grade better than 2.0)
  • Strong background in ML (graphical models, deep learning), statistics, and preferably causal inference methods
  • Experience in working with time-series data, preferably clinical data
  • Programming expertise with Python, R and SQL
  • Proven skill in scientific writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

The position is initially limited to 2 years.
