Working student: Assembly of an ultrasonic characterization lab for fluidic characterizations

The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Microsystems and Solid State Technologies EMFT, with currently almost 180 employees at its sites in Munich (headquarters), Oberpfaffenhofen and Regensburg, conducts cutting-edge applied research on sensors and actuators for people and the environment. The competences are based on impressive long-term experience and extensive know-how in the fields of microelectronics and microsystem technology. These nano- and microtechnologies are the basis for the other competence areas at Fraunhofer EMFT: sensor solutions, safe and secure electronics, and micropumps. The interdisciplinary interaction of these competencies enables the development of truly novel solutions, putting Fraunhofer EMFT in an ideal position for tackling the current challenges of our society.

 

The Circuit Design group is focused on design of integrated circuits for a wide range of applications. One of the core research topics of the group is ultrasound, where the focus lays on the design of analog-front-end ASICs for various types of ultrasound transducers. As part of the ultrasound research, the group designs and characterizes micromachined ultrasonic transducers using a very well-equipped electronic lab. In this project, the student will be responsible of the buildup of the ultrasonic characterization lab which would serve as a base for characterization of MUTs in fluidic environments. 

 

What you will do

  • Improving the measurement repeatability/robustness of the current setup
  • Automation of the characterization process using Python
  • Conducting characterizations with at hand transducers
  • Documentation of the process

 

What you bring to the table

  • Professional experince in mechatronics
  • Languages and program languages: German or English, Python 
  • Soft skills: good communications skills, well organized, work independently, motivated, self-initiative
  • Experience with handling measurement equipment (operation of oscilloscope, etc.
  • Practical experience with measurement processes and tools
  • Good knowledge in Python for automation of measurement processes
  • Experience in CAD design using Solidworks to design 3D printed parts
  • Overall technical skills in mechatronics

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
