Working student / internship for dependable person detection

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer institute for Cognitive Systems IKS is specialized on applied research in the innovative areas of artificial intelligence, cognitive systems and intelligent software architectures for autonomous systems. Our focus lies on safety-critical applications in the fields of automation, mobility and health. We develop reliable software technologies with a benefit for humans. For example, we conduct an extensive safety analysis and calidation of perception algorithms in automotive. Through our work, we lay the foundation for a reliable digital future.

What you will do

Reliably detecting persons is crucial for many applications and processes, like in self-driving cars or to prevent factory workers from being injured by heavy machines. While AI algorithms may achieve great accuracy in the detection of persons, it is necessary to understand, in which situations their performance degrades or completely fails, e.g. due to occlusion of pedestrians or lighting conditions.

In our group we offer a working student position / internship in the field of dependable person detection. Your task is to investigate, how reliably different object detection algorithms can recognize and locate persons. This will include 3D algorithms, like multi-camera approaches or sensor fusion. You will implement currently available methods in this area, evaluate their performance and systematically study their dependability.

What you bring to the table

  • You study computer science, electrical engineering or a similar subject.
  • Good programming skills in Python
  • Knowledge in deep learning
  • Experience with object detection algorithms, e.g. Yolo or Faster R-CNN
  • Plus: first experience with 3D object detection.

What you can expect

  • Very nice supervisors, a good atmosphere and technical equipment (e.g. to work remote)
  • A fair salary and the possibility to work flexible (up to 20h/week)
  • Contributing to research of practical relevance for your studies at the university.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.

Interested? Apply online now. We look forward to getting to know you!
