Master's thesis: Enhanced information flows for maintenance processes in battery production

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

We, the Fraunhofer Institute for Battery Cell Production FFB, have made it our mission to become the center for the development of modern and scalable battery cell production for Germany and Europe. Every day, we work on creating infrastructure that allows companies and research institutions to test, implement, and optimize the near-series production of new batteries. This is how we shape the battery cell production of tomorrow.

This thesis is written as a cooperation between the Fraunhofer FFB, Northvolt and the IDEA League Universities RWTH Aachen University and Chalmers University of Technology. You will work on the topic of enhanced information flows for maintenance processes in battery production in close contact with another student from Chalmers University of Technology using Input from Nothvolt and FFB. This master thesis aims to map, analyse, and enhance data and information flows for maintenance processes in battery production. By leveraging modern technologies, such as big data, machine learning, and cloud architecture, you will explore the potential of data in optimizing maintenance in gigafactories, focusing on real-time monitoring, remote inspections, digital documentation, and their integration with computerized maintenance management systems.

What you will do

  • Map and analyse data and information flows in battery maintenance processes for optimization.
  • Explore smart technologies to boost maintenance efficiency in gigafactories.
  • Examine challenges to improve data-driven maintenance adoption.
  • Build data pipelines to act on shopfloor events in real-time and connect your solution to an existing manufacturing execution system to trigger maintenance work and change machine states.

What you bring to the table

  • You are a Master student in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or a comparable subject.
  • Basic understanding of production systems and maintenance.
  • Knowledge in data analytics and the basics of machine learning.
  • High grades are meritorious.

What you can expect

  • Project with lighthouse character: With your thesis, you can contribute to enabling the industry for an economical and ecological production of battery cells.
  • Exciting insights: With us, you will gain insights into the diverse topics of Fraunhofer FFB and have the chance to specialize according to your strengths and interests.
  • Individual support: We ensure that you receive high-quality support for your thesis. We are here with expertise and experience to ensure that you can give your best.
  • Flexible working hours and home office: We understand that the schedule for theses is often demanding. Therefore, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work from home. This allows you to optimally integrate your work into your daily life.
  • FFB climate and team spirit: In addition to a collegial and appreciative work environment as well as flat hierarchies, you can expect Christmas/summer parties and team meetings that promote exchange and networking among each other.

We value and promote the diversity of skills among our employees and therefore welcome all applications—regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social background, religion, beliefs, disability, as well as sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled individuals will be given preference if equally qualified. We would like to point out that the chosen job title also includes the third gender. The Fraunhofer Society places importance on gender-independent professional equality.

The position is limited to the duration of the processing period.
