Thesis »Development and Investigation of a large-format iron-air Battery«

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

As one of 76 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft we show how to not only master crises, but grow from them. Pushing boundaries. Always trying something new. Not just thinking, but thinking ahead. We turn research into the future.

We want an earth that is worth living on. With our applied research on Circular Economy, Carbon Management, Green Hydrogen and Local Energy Systems, we make concrete contributions to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Our employees conduct research in the fields of energy, environment, safety, health, communication and mobility.

The availability of resource-efficient and sustainable stationary electricity storage systems is a key pillar for the success of the energy and raw materials transition. One focus of applied research in the "Electrochemical Energy Storage" department is therefore on the new and further development of flow and non-flow battery systems. As part of your thesis, you will develop and investigate a large-scale iron-air battery.

What you will do

  • Development of cell components using CAD
  • Production of cell components using CNC milling machines, 3D printers, cutting plotters, laser cutters, laser welding systems, hot presses, etc.
  • Electrochemical measurement of battery cells
  • Evaluation, interpretation and writing of the measurement data as part of your final thesis

What you bring to the table

  • Studies in the field of mechanical engineering, process engineering, energy technology, environmental technology or a similar field
  • Basic understanding of electrochemistry and mechanical engineering
  • Independent way of working
  • Enjoy contributing your own ideas

What you can expect

  • As part of a dynamic team, you actively drive sustainable solutions for a resource-efficient future
  • Opportunity to combine your knowledge from your studies with practical experience at the interface between business and science and to integrate your own ideas
