Creation of a Simulation of an Agricultural Environment and Outdoor Robots

In the "Field Robotics" group at Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart, we are an international research team passionate about developing holistic robotic systems for sustainable and future-proof agriculture in Europe. In doing so, we rely on advanced AI technology to improve food quality, protect our environment without economically disadvantaging farmers, and create sustainable pathways to regenerative and ecological agriculture.

In this context, a realistic and robust simulation environment is essential. Part of such a simulation environment are mobile outdoor robots and realistic environment models, or ground conditions. Important in the creation of such models is a realistic simulation, so that, for example, computer vision approaches can be pre-trained with it. The first step will be the development of a field / farmland with plants and weeds, and the integration of a mobile field robot.

Develope and create outdoor environments in Nvidia Isaac Sim and Gazebo
Implement realistic mobile outdoor robot models in simulation
Extend the robot models with various different sensors such as camera and LiDAR

Was Du mitbringst

Profound knowledge of kinematic and dynamic modelling of mobile robots
Experience in ROS/ROS2
Experience with Gazebo preferred
Experience with XML formats URDF and SDF preferred
Fluency in German or English
Interest in working with mobile robots
