Final Thesis - Obstacle detection for mobile outdoor robots based on RADAR data
Advertisement for subjects such as: computer science, mechatronics or similar. In the Professional Service Robots - Outdoor research group we develop autonomous, mobile robots for a variety of outdoor applications, such as agriculture and forestry. The focus is on the development of an autonomous outdoor navigation solution as well as the hardware of the robots.
Compared to predictable indoor environments the outdoor areas inherit more diverse and also unknown obstacles and external influences. The most used sensors to percept and interpret the environment in robotics are currently cameras and LiDAR sensors. Besides them RADAR sensors are often used in automated driving and appear to have some benefits in outdoor environments due to their robustness to external influences like rain or fog. This thesis targets the analysis how the RADAR based data processing can improve or replace the LiDAR based environment perception. Therefore you will develop a RADAR based obstacle detection algorithm and compare it with a LiDAR based solution.
What you will do
Our mobile outdoor robot CURTmini increasingly has to operate in complex environments, such as coffee plantations in Brazil and vineyards with steep slopes along the Mosel river. For this, you are to become part of the team that develops and tests navigation solutions for outdoor mobile robots. Your work will be focused on the development and implementation of an obstacle detection algorithm based on RADAR data.
What you bring to the table
