Internship/HiWi in the automation planning research group: Humanoid robotics 1 1

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Announcement for fields of study such as: Automation technology, computer science, cybernetics, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, control engineering, technical computer science, technology management, industrial engineering or similar.

The robotics department at Fraunhofer IPA is working on humanoid robots, among other things. To validate the industrial application possibilities of humanoid robots, we are currently looking for several committed interns or student assistants (m/f/d) who would like to take the opportunity to gain practical experience with our Unitree G1 to support our team. You will work in a group with other students and take on specific tasks. The aim is to analyse the robot's capabilities and to implement algorithms that enable the robot to be used sensibly in applications

What you will do

During your internship, you will be able to take on tasks from the following areas:

  • Navigation: Implementation of a navigation algorithm for the collision-free movement of the robot in its environment
  • Manipulation: Development and implementation of gripping strategies, determination of the inverse kinematics of the arms
  • Planning and development of a use case for the industrial use of the robot
  • Supporting the research group in day-to-day research

What you bring to the table

  • You already have some programming experience, e.g. in python or C++
  • You are no stranger to 3D transformations and ROS2
  • You can handle hardware responsibly
  • You are open and curious about other specialist areas and willing to familiarise yourself independently with new topics
  • Very good language skills in German and English round off your profile
  • Optional: You have already worked with simulation environments such as Mujoco or IsaacSim
  • Manipulation: Experience with MoveIt, control theory, inverse kinematics, kinematic optimisation libraries (e.g. PyRoki or similar)
  • Navigation: ROS2 NAV2, SLAM, sensors for map creation and localisation

What you can expect

  • Hands-on work on a humanoid robot: You may validate your results on the robot
  • Open and self-determined working environment: you will have the opportunity to develop your own solutions for a wide range of challenges
  • Theory-practice transfer: We offer you ideal conditions to apply your knowledge in practice alongside your studies
  • Attractive framework conditions: Flexible working hours to optimize the compatibility of study and practice

If you are interested in putting your skills to the test and one of the areas of responsibility described above might suit you, please get in touch with us!

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the federal government guidelines for intern salaries.
