Master Thesis - Design of a Test Bed for Experiments with Omni-Drive Modules (robotic drive system)

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ( currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros. 

CURT is the name of the robot family being developed in the Professional Service Robots - Outdoor research group. These are autonomous, mobile robots for a variety of outdoor applications, such as agriculture and forestry.  The focus is on the hardware development of the robots themselves and on autonomous outdoor navigation.
For this we are looking for you to contribute to the development of a test bed for Omni-Drive Modules 


What you will do

Our mobile agricultural robots CURTmini, CURTmvp and CURTmaxi increasingly have to operate in complex environments, such as coffee plantations in Brazil and vineyards with steep slopes along the Mosel river. For this, you are to become part of the team that develops and tests new, high-performance drive systems. The drive system in this thesis is a module that enables both single-wheel steering and drive, called the Omni-Drive Module. 
Since these are new developments, they must undergo extensive testing. Your task will be to conceptualize and implement a suitable test bed after analyzing the system. It should then be possible to analyse the drive modules for specific properties.


What you bring to the table

  • Background in hardware design with related methodologies 
  • Profound CAD skills (SolidWorks or similar) 
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Fluent in English or German 
  • Excellent grades
