Master Thesis - Development of a lightweight continuous track for autonomous small robots

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros. 

CURT is the name of the robot family being developed in the Professional Service Robots - Outdoor research group. These are autonomous, mobile robots for a variety of outdoor applications, such as agriculture and forestry.  The focus is on the hardware development of the robots themselves and on autonomous outdoor navigation.
 
For this we are looking for you to contribute to the development of a lightweight continuous track.

 

What you will do

Our mobile agricultural robot CURTmini has to operate in complex environments with challenging undergrounds. For this, you are to lay the foundation for the development of a lightweight drive based on tracks for this small robot. Demands for the track drive are robustness, weight, modularity and an electric drive system. A methodical way of working is very important, and includes a requirements analysis, conception of new systems and their implementation as well as prototypical tests on real robots.

 

What you bring to the table

  • Background in hardware design with related methodologies 
  • Profound CAD skills (SolidWorks or similar) 
  • Experience with drive systems preferred 
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Fluent in English or German 
  • Excellent grades
