Student assistant - Applications of Large Language Models to Industrial Use-Cases

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Specialization: Computer science, cybernetics, mathematics, technical computer science or comparable.

Industrial companies face unique challenges when utilizing generative AI, such as the risk of intellectual property loss through data leaks. The Cyber Cognitive Intelligence department (CCI) is researching customer-specific, data-protection-compliant methods for content generation in various modalities to address this issue. CCI is building a team of researchers to apply GenAI to industry-related use-cases.

What you will do

The goal of the proposed work is to contribute to our GenAI projects, including the following tasks:

  • Research and development of (multimodal) generative AI approaches
  • Implementing and studying generative AI for industrial use cases with industry-specific problems
  • Research into methods in the areas of privacy-preserving machine learning and membership inference attacks
  • Development of innovative solutions using modern methods of machine learning and statistics
  • Practical implementation and testing of generative AI in cooperation with industrial partners

What you bring to the table

  • Experience in statistics and machine learning, especially with generative models such as GAN, VAE, and diffusion, as well as transformers
  • Experience in application domains such as text, code or image generation (e.g. with Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT or Llama)
  • Ideally experience in task-specific fine-tuning of pre-trained ML (foundation) models
  • Good programming knowledge in relevant programming languages, such as Python and Jupyter Notebooks
  • Practical experience in toolkits such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, LangChain or similar
  • Very good knowledge of German and/or very good English
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, autonomy are important qualities for this position

What you can expect

  • Interesting tasks in applied research and development in close contact with industry
  • First-class equipped test fields and a unique research infrastructure
  • Professional and creative working atmosphere in committed teams as well as innovative, future-oriented subject areas in a renowned research institute
  • Modernly equipped workplaces and flexible working hours
