Thesis (M): Technical and economic evaluation of pyrolysis gases with oxyfuel

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros. 

Bioenergy in combination with CO2 capture (BECCS or BECCU) is seen by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as a key technology for preventing a climate catastrophe. Work with us to develop an energy and mass balance with profitability calculations based on a newly constructed plant in the EU-funded NET-fuels project (www.net-fuels.eu).

 

What you will do

  • Expanding a Sankey diagram with the upper heating value, addition of sulfur species, reagents and waste products in the process

  • Evaluation of mass and energy measurements from the pilot plant and subsequent balancing of the model with the measured data

  • Support with the commissioning and testing of the pilot plant

  • Calculation of the internal rate of return, cost-benefit analysis and decision curve analysis based on an existing analysis using the net present value method

 

What you bring to the table

Must have:

  • Degree in process engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering, environmental science or computer science

  • Knowledge of the Python programming language

 

Nice to have:

  • Interest in plant engineering, chemistry, oil and gas, pyrolysis and CO2 capture

  • Very good knowledge of English and willingness to write a paper in English

  • Willingness to help with plant operation on site

  • German language skills

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
