Student Assistent: Manufacturing & Optimisation of CFRP Ring Reinforcements

The Fraunhofer Kunststoffzentrum Oberlausitz in Zittau is currently looking for committed female and male students who want to write a thesis or work as student assistant while studying.


What you will do

The aim of your work is to investigate the use of a ring made of high-strenght carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the reinforcement of drive components of a high-speed flywheel energy storage system. The CFRP ring reinforcement is intended to be pressed onto the metallic drive components of the flywheel energy storage system. During the manufacturing of the press fit, both joining partners are mechanically highly stressed. By optimizing parameters in the manufacturing process, the mechanical stresses should be reduced to an acceptable level.


The use of the CFRP ring reinforcement is intended to reduce the load on the metallic drive components during operation. The flywheel energy storage system can then be operated at significantly higher speeds - speeds at which the drive components would fail without CFRP ring reinforcement.


The flywheel energy storage system is currently being developed in a joint project of Fraunhofer IWU in Zittau and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. Industrially scalable flywheel energy storage systems are a key technology for the successful implementation of the energy transition. For the stabilisation of energy grids, they can compensate residual loads by providing the necessary positive and negative control power for load management.

With your work, you will make an important contribution to the project „Funktionsintegrierte Leichtbaustrukturen zur effizienten Energiebereitstellung und -speicherung - LuE“ (In English: "Functionally Integrated Lightweight Structures for Efficient Energy Supply and Storage").


Within your thesis or work as student assistant you will address the following subtasks:

  • Research on the state of the art for the design and manufacturing of CFRP ring reinforcements,
  • Design of a tool for pressing the CFRP ring reinforcement onto the metallic drive components of the flywheel energy storage system,
  • Testing of the tool and pressing process using a 2000-ton column press,
  • Investigation of the quality of the produced ring reinforcement,
  • Determination of factors in the manufacturing process that influence the quality of the ring reinforcement,
  • Optimization of the manufacturing process and the tool that is used.


What you bring to the table

  • Student of mechanical engineering, mechatronics, energy and environmental engineering, industrial engineering, or comparable courses of study,
  • Successful progress in your studies, high level of commitment, and an independent, structured way of working,
  • Interest in interdisciplinary tasks and curiosity in researching new technologies,
  • Good proficiency in a CAD program (e.g. Solid Works, CATIA, Siemens NX),
  • Good Manual skills,
  • Good proficiency in German or English in speaking and writing.
